Great Films

Great stories, well told.

These films purposefully diverge from those on common internet lists. They don't share genre or culture. What they do share is masterful writing and execution. Most recently added first.

Prospect - 2018

A teenage girl and her father travel to a remote alien moon, aiming to strike it rich. They've secured a contract to harvest a large deposit of the elusive gems hidden in the depths of the moon's toxic forest. But there are others roving the wilderness and the job quickly devolves into a fight to survive.

Why: The writing expertly crafts situations where the character has no other choices, engaging you logically and emotionally as they are pushed more deeply into crises. Also, if you're a fan of westerns, this has a wonderful Treasure of the Sierra Madre vibe.

The Favourite - 2019

A frail Queen Anne (Olivia Colman) occupies the throne and her close friend Lady Sarah Churchill (Rachel Weisz) governs the country in her stead while tending to Anne's ill health and mercurial temper. When a new servant Abigail Masham (Emma Stone) arrives, her charm endears her to Sarah. Sarah takes Abigail under her wing and Abigail sees a chance at a return to her aristocratic roots. As the politics of war become quite time consuming for Sarah, Abigail steps into the breach to fill in as the Queen's companion. Set against a beautiful landscape defiled by war, this poetic film makes an eloquent statement for peace.
