When the lines are drawn over the background map, they often obscure the names of rivers and canals.
It's not a problem with streams or ditches, since OSM carto renders their names off the center line.
Would it make sense to show the name of a river / canal next to the rendered line?
To ensure that the map does not get to busy, names shouldn't be repeated too often. A starting zoom of 12-13 might be okay.

I would love that feature. I'm currently using waterwaymap to visually identify important rivers to show on a custom map, and to get the names I have to change to a different browser tab with openstreetmap.org running.
I can see the problems you talk about. A hack to hide all the current rivers is to turn on (in the Settings) the “max length: ∞” setting.
I would like to do more with names & WWM. I want to associate names & the thickness/upstream values. However right now the software doesn't support that at all, and I need to think about how to support that.
