Sorry to bother you, what is your file manager? I'm using Dophin but I have black folder/files names on dark background and in general a light theme in all kde apps on Niri. I don't get how to apply (kde) theme in Niri too. Can you/someone give a tip to me? Thanks!

Thinner vertical waybar, rounded corners and global theme switching, even applied to Neovim!

Without the delay of some GTK apps, the theme switching animation would be perfect yet I don't want to delay the whole animation to wait for them

By several scripts: setbg, setcolor and some config in Neovim. The setbg corresponds to the background option in Neovim, while setcolor corresponds to :colorscheme .... Furthermore, you also need to modify the GTK themes that will be applied to adopt these script.

Thanks for config, I saw noisetorch which is not maintained anymore. People suggest easyeffects (pkg) which is better.

Do you use cozette everywhere? Satisfied and settled on it?
I'm never satisfied with any font or theme.
Even this week i was reading about font and trying them all out, iosevka, unifont, zed, monaspace, 0xproto, jetbrains, comicmono, every nerdfonts out there. So far I keep coming back to iosevka due to compactness (it spoiled me)

not anymore I'm afraid! I switched back to my standard aesthetic a little while ago. However, you can replicate the above by using YaLTer's waybar, and adjusting the colour palette, but also re-arranging a few elements and adding a few others.
The icons are Lucrezia light, and the theme is quartz-chicle.
I plan to take another stab at the cutesy pink aesthetic at some point, maybe with something a little stronger and bolder, but I need to improve my toolkit before I do that.

No idea why sway is listed as WM, but no Sway in use (beside swaybg and swaylock).

Very on brand for me to forget what file formats each app is using. Seeing as my goal is not to re-invent the wheel where I don't have to, I'll get it to integrate with KDL, and any other formats if that changes.

First of all: niri is great! Feels much more natural than sway (plus uses over 15% less RAM with my standard apps opened). Just switched recently and have setup most things so far (Of course, captured with Ctrl+Print); but not the largest screen:

• Void Linux
• yambar (build from source with niri-workspaces PR merged)
• foot terminal
• fnott notifications
• fuzzel finder

Obviously, following dnkl's stuff on Codeberg... 😉

Understanding and styling yambar took some time, but was really fun. Personally, I prefer it over waybar for its simplicity and speed

Wallpaper: #000000 (you can probably tell it's my favorite color 😄 )
Shell: nushell + carapece (for external completions). Thinking of going back to fish.
Privilege Elevation: run0 (might aswell use it since it comes with systemd, along with sdboot, networkd, resolved...)

Also using wine-wow64 without multilib with wine's wayland driver.

I used to be a Gnome user before tiling WMs. Back when Gnome removed systray I got used to it since extensions kept braking I eventually started to run vanilla Gnome and grown to appreciate clean minimal interface.
On my system only Steam would put an icon in systray on swaybar when I used Sway.

Now on Niri I chose not to run a bar. And I don't miss the systray really. But then again I barely have any GUI programs on my system. Most of the programs are CLI or TUI with few exceptions.

I kinda miss the workspace indicator. I hope niri will implement Gnome style overview #759

Anyway, it's all very subjective and my own personal preferences. 😃

You can do that fairly easily with eww, since there is a built in tray functionality, and you can specify if the widget exclusive zone or not

theres probably not a ready made one but ive used a simple shell script with zenity for a long time and it works beautifully, you just make your own dialogues and open them however you want

A custom script enhances the output of niri msg -j windows by adding icon paths and grouping windows by workspace_id. In EWW configuration I call niri msg -j workspaces and, for each workspace, I draw monitor's type (I use a laptop with external monitor) and the corrisponding list of window icons, avoiding empty workspaces.

I am satisfied with the result, the only improvement is sorting the icons based on the position of the windows but currently it is not possible, I think.

Things that I am waiting on

• being able to set swing in from the sides to change app and bottom to toggle waybar visibility: Gesture bindings #372
• Overview to bind to the square: Add an overview/zooming feature #352
• Some kind of touch friendly launcher for the "home" button
• Figure out what to do with the back button, I may just remove it, but for now I am thinking about binding it to "mouse back" or maybe escape.
• wvkbd support since squeekboard is kinda... not great for a lot of things new_from_fd() reduces size by one breaking wvkbd on smithay rust-x-bindings/xkbcommon-rs#58
• some kind of touch friendly notification tool
• some kind of control panel for different things

Eventually I also want to try my hand at making a TV config, which more or less has some of the same limitations with some more painful ones like OSK going to be really hard to do.

nwg-drawer unfortunately seems to completely break with portait aspect ratios, but it seems configurable enough that I can work around this, I was having weird jumpy issues with touch however.

I found https://github.com/catacombing/tzompantli too which I will be keeping an eye on, but for now, Ill try to make nwg-drawer work too

I haven't committed Niri's config file because I wanted to iterate on it quickly without having to run nixos-rebuild every time, (and there's no kdl support for writing the config in Nix, yes I know I could use niri-flake) but the rest of the dotfiles are in this repo somewhere: https://kirarin.hootr.club/git/steinuil/flakes

I'm running waybar, alacritty, Firefox with the new sidebar and some Catppuccin themes installed with Stylus. I'm on a Framework 13" laptop and the output scale is set to 1.4, which feels bad on a gut level, but somehow I feel like it's the sweet spot for the display's DPI...

Niri's really working out well for me on this laptop. I wasn't completely sold on the infinite scroll but it feels very natural! I'd love to switch to it on my desktop as well, but since I use it for gaming I'm afraid I might run into some issues that I really don't want to deal with when I just want to play some games. Maybe I'll give it a try when I have some spare time.

Nice! FWIW for me gaming works mostly fine on niri. xwayland-satellite works very well for Steam and games, including proton.

Good to know! On this laptop, Steam's main windows is a black void on xwayland-satellite and I haven't really figured out why, because GIMP for example works fine. I'm guessing it has to do with fractional scaling (which I don't need on my desktop).

I think you need to toggle hardware acceleration in Steam or something. It's a common problem
