Follow-up on #298, the second and the last chunk of the big upgrade process.
Should be much easier to review than #298.
I'm currently making it draft and basing it against
v1.13.0branch in case you guys want to start reviewing it.After #298 merges, I'll base it against
mainbranch and this PR will no longer be a draft.
