Can't find a possibility to hide the picture to save space in the compact view.
How is this possible to show only the name (give space for lobger names) ?

afaik, this is not possible so far.
I also like the idea, since I have some plants without an image at all - would be great, to be able to hide such an empty "image area" ;)
