Always on Display not working while connected to Android Auto

AOD works fine in every other situation. Esp. while charging normally on usb-c-power supply at home.

I think you may have enabled the android screen saver, it gets activated in docking mode.
Go to Android Settings -> Display -> Screen saver and disable it.

I just drove 2,700 miles across the country with it. Mine stays on so long that Android Auto starts complaining that my phone performance will improve if I turn off the screen.
