Over the past week I've been having discussions with @Sawuare on Discord and cleaning up this repo. The assets project has been stagnant for at least a couple years and its time it gets finished. For (hopefully) the next few months, I'd like to help finally tackle this project. Below I've detailed a plan for knocking this out.

  1. Ensure that all our rules are up-to-date. I suggest we keep the rules we have, but allow people to send the asset mods samples that might not meet every specification as long as they are made by the individual. (see note at bottom) That way the submitters won't have to worry about normalization, converting to flac, cutting out silence, etc. The asset mods can fairly easily make these edits themselves. We'll need to have a discussion about the goal in terms of sample library size and at what point we have enough samples.

  2. Reopen the #assets discord channel for an easy, dedicated location for sample submissions. The assets channel should be renamed to #assets-project, or something of the sort to discourage people from posting their personal assets in their without realizing what the channel is for. Hopefully the presence of the #resources channel will also help with this. We can post both rules and encouraged practices in the assets project channel description. (Ex. Rule: Must be made by you. Encouraged: Wav, flac, 44.1kHz, 24 bit...)

  3. Post on social media/youtube/#news... (any outlet appropriate) that we are revamping the sample library and that we are currently looking for self-made samples for the new LMMS Sample Library. (Perhaps @Umcaruje can help with that? I don't know who runs that stuff.) Encourage submissions to be made sooner rather than later. Maybe also reach out to some LMMS Artists known to create samples.

  4. Let the process begin. Close the Discord channel and remove the social media post when we have the samples we need.

  5. Do a final organization of the samples, ensure consistent naming, and make final cuts to samples.

  • Review rules and solidify goal
    • Reopen #assets-project Discord channel
    • Create submission form
    • Host submission form on LMMS account
  • Post on various outlets
    • Create spreadsheet for keeping track of artists contacted
    • Start reaching out to artists
    • Post to Discord #news
    • Post to LMMS Forum?
  • Final organization
    • Deadline?
    • Cut out unneeded assets
    • Review assets for final naming and sorting
    • Close Discord channel

Note: We also accept samples when the submitter has a way to validly prove the files are CC0 (through showing, in writing, that the author has placed them in public domain/CC0), otherwise they will be rejected out of the gate. However, I suggest we don't advertise this way of submitting samples as much because all kinds of confusion ensues when someone submits a file they got for free and don't realize it must be public domain/CC0. I still suggest we keep that option open and in the rules on the GitHub page and the Discord channel, but we don't mention it in advertising the project.
