PS1 games stutter when played from internal HDD #20

I'm using Rebug 4.85.1 with webMAN MOD 1.47.25 and PS1 games stutter when played from internal HDD. The issue will not occur neither when the games are mounted with IRISMAN or when mounted with webMAN but from external HDD.

My system is a NTSC CECHA01 and the games I tried are NTSC as well. Bellow some games I tested:

  • Oddworld Abe's Oddysee
  • Marvel vs Capcom
  • X-Men Children of the Atom

It was discussed previously in webMAN's github aldostools/webMAN-MOD#295

Maybe it is useful information:

Theoretically all PS3 should emulate PS1 games via software, right?
So there shouldn't be any difference between CECHA01 vs. CECH-2004A.

I've tried to mount (BIN+CUE) Oddworld - Abe's Oddysee (SLES_006.64)
through webMAN MOD 1.47.25 from internal HDD (1 TB HDD):

So PAL version of a game on PAL console on Rebug 4.85.1 Lite.
Everything seems to be fine.
I mean FMV plays fine, gameplay is smooth (I've played this game for ~20-30 min).

Maybe it is related with bandwidth and/or the way Cobra handles the data stream from the HDD and it won't happen for PAL games because they have 50Hz.

I'll try PAL games and see what happens.

No luck with PAL games... same issue

I will also try to test Oddworld - Abe's Oddysee (SLUS_001.90).

Could you try to put in your console another HDD for test?
I mean something smaller (e.g. 500 GB)?

I've tested with a 60GB HDD and the games work properly. So the issue is related to the HDD size and it has to be Cobra since the games won't stutter when played through IRSMAN.

From what I remember PS3 theatrically supports up to 2TB.
Some 2 TB might work, some might have problems, some might not work.

Best compatibility you'll get with something smaller e.g. 1 TB or even 1.5 TB.

One thing I forgot to mention is that PS2 games work flawlessly.

There are a few potential solutions that you can try to fix the stuttering issue when playing PS1 games from the internal HDD using webMAN MOD:

1. Try using a different version of webMAN MOD. It's possible that the version you are using has a bug that is causing the stuttering. You could try using an older or newer version to see if that resolves the issue.

2. Adjust the fan settings. If your PS3 is running too hot, it could cause stuttering when playing games. You can use webMAN MOD to adjust the fan settings and make sure your PS3 is running at an appropriate temperature.

3. Use a different game launcher. As you mentioned, you don't experience the stuttering issue when using IRISMAN, so you could try using that instead of webMAN MOD to see if it resolves the issue.

4. Reinstall the games. It's possible that the games you have installed on your internal HDD have become corrupted. You could try deleting and reinstalling them to see if that resolves the issue.

5. Check your hard drive. It's possible that your internal HDD is failing or has errors that are causing the stuttering. You could try running a disk check utility to see if there are any issues with the drive.
