label placement in geoserver (2.16) is in the middle (left), where qgis shows it a bit off (right), also the color seems a bit more grayish (less clear)

it's probably this setting on qgis labels:

which probably doesn't have a similar thing in sld/geoserver, maybe we should provide an offset if this is activated?

SLD has a perpendicularOffset property in label placement. It has supported for a long time on "straight line labels", and since end of 2017 on "follow line" labels.
