Here are the most pressing issues that we will need to deal with before implementation:
We need to either a) tighten the quality control of the VIIRS fire detections, or b) implement a scan angle correction. We will work with Meng on this. (He is now focused on a MAP proposal, I will bring him in once the proposal is submitted.)
We need to address the false alarms in VIIRS, filtering
-Gas flares (perhaps assigning a different biome)
-Lava from explosive volcanos
-Solar farms in the desert. I do not have an approach for this yet.
-Other spurious detection, like tops of some city buildings (I heard about this during ICAP).
Recalibrate all satellites using VIIRS as reference
Perhaps update the biome assignment database (also, Meng can help), perhaps introduce “peat” and “gas flares” as additional biomes.
Re-tune the emission coefficients for each biome using the standard inverse calculation (Pam can help with this)
