I will log this as a bug and enhancement.

It's the most common mistake people make with pulse. They normally paste in the feature service instead of the feature layer.

The fix:
Automatically add "/0" if a feature layer hasn't specifically been defined.

Another fix would be, when a user pastes a feature layer in, a drop down of available layers will appear...
