The next monthly ESMValTool meeting will be in June. The result of the poll is that it will be on

Monday, June 7 at 11:00 CEST (10:00 BST).

The duration will be one hour. Join the zoom meeting.

Calendar invitations to the meeting are sent to the mailing list, join it here.

@ESMValGroup/esmvaltool-developmentteam

Format and agenda

  • Anyone with an interest in ESMValTool is welcome to join and ask questions
  • We start the meeting by doing a round where everyone gets one minute to introduce themselves and tell what they will be working on in the next month or what they would like help with.
  • Using the input from the introduction round, we can decide to talk about specific topics with the entire group or make smaller breakout groups to continue the discussion there.
  • If you already know that you would like to bring up a particular topic in the meeting, you can mention the GitHub issue on the topic in a comment in this issue. That will make it easy to find for other people in the meeting and we can already start discussing there before the meeting. Just create a new GitHub issue about your topic if there is no open issue yet.
  • GitHub issues are our preferred way to communicate outside the meeting and keep track of work, so any feature requests/action items/etc discussed in the meeting should ideally result in a GitHub issue.

Notes from the April meeting can be found here: #2086 (comment), while updates from the May workshop can be obtained as described here: #2067 (comment).

@ESMValGroup/esmvaltool-developmentteam I am very sorry, but I will not be available to organize the meeting at the dates initially in the doodle. I have updated the poll with new dates, could you please have another go at filling it?

Thanks for joining this morning! Here is a summary with some of the highlights of the meeting:

Getting started
@annefou and Catherine Hardacre were just getting started with the tool and were generally quite happy with the tutorial. A useful selection of information on getting started with git and GitHub can be found in the linked articles from The Turing Way.

IPCC AR6
Guidelines have been sent out by @remi-kazeroni and @ledm to all IPCC AR6 authors that used the ESMValTool for creating their figures on how they can proceed to integrate those diagnostics into the ESMValTool.

New projects
Several people announced they would be starting new projects with the tool! 🥳 Please add the details yourself if you would like to share

New diagnostics overview paper published
@katjaweigel Successfully got the Earth System Model Evaluation Tool (ESMValTool) v2.0 – diagnostics for extreme events, regional and impact evaluation, and analysis of Earth system models in CMIP diagnostics overview paper published 🎉 She is still looking for reviewers for the last pull requests #2153 and #2156. Please give her a hand @ESMValGroup/tech-reviewers and @ESMValGroup/science-reviewers!

CORDEX support
@thomascrocker Mentioned that he is using the tool for analyzing CORDEX data and running into various issues. In IS-ENES3 there is some work planned before the end of this year to improve support for CORDEX data, this is led by @zklaus of SMHI and from the IS-ENES3 proposal it looks like a 5 person month contribution is also expected from CMCC, though I do not know who of CMCC will work on this. @zklaus or @remi-kazeroni Could one of you say more about this?

Support for DCCP data
@sloosvel Is working on improving support for DCCP data (ESMValGroup/ESMValCore#1120 (comment)) and will organize a meeting with @jvegasbsc @schlunma @zklaus @bouweandela and anyone else who is interested in the topic, to speed up the process of deciding how the recipe needs to be adjusted to cater for this type of data.

Summary of ESMValTool workshop now available
@axel-lauer Announced that a summary of the May ESMValTool workshop is now available on esmvaltool.org.

Presentations from IS-ENES3 workshop available
The presentations of the IS-ENES3 Virtual workshop on requirements for a fast and scalable evaluation workflow are available here and @sloosvel mentioned that the workshop was quite successful.

Reading climate model output in its native format
@zklaus @senesis and @bsolino are making good progress in adding support for reading the output of various climate models in directly with the ESMValCore

If I forgot to mention your update, please forgive me and add it yourself.

I'm not directly involved in this IS-ENES3 task but I know that @francesco-cmcc is using the ESMValTool for CORDEX data. Feel free to add here other IS-ENES3 members working with CORDEX.
