I have used the search function for openandclosed ideas to see if someone else has already submitted the same request.
I will describe the feature with as much detail as possible.
Description
I'm not sure if this should be a bug report or a new feature suggestion, I'm going to post it as a discussion as to not clutter the issues section.
It seems that currently, if "fully collapse comment" is off, when a comment is collapsed manually, it looks exactly like if there are no children comments. It would be more user-friendly if users are able to differentiate between these two.
Also, the default Material You implementation chooses a bright accent colour for the fully-collapsed comment background, which is the opposite of wanting to collapse the comment to make it less distracting. A muted colour would be more appropriate. But that should be in another thread instead.
Solution
When "fully collapse comment" is on, it works as one would expect, so I would suggest that it be implemented also to when comments are not fully collapsed. (different background colour, number of children comments)
