This issue shall be used to log (weekly) meeting agendas and the corresponding resolution of the topics addressed (minutes). This will help us maintain a record of topics discussed and the resolution of these issues. Each comment shall contain a meeting agenda for a given week, edited later with the resolution for each point of order.

Other impromptu meetings that are relevant to the whole group can also be logged here for posterity and members of the team (or people following the project) who couldn't join.

    • @ppebay for LBAF, the load is just the aggregate of all load on the node
    • @PhilMiller how do we separate concerns between the Load Manager, strategies, etc and downstream tools/applications
      • Strategy should be model-agnostics, but this breaks down wrt communication cost
    • @ppebay want to associate work with movement of energy; i.e. including communication, etc. Basically aggregate of everything
      • @PhilMiller load model design focused on predictive change in load in the future under effect of the load balancer
        • Also there are some costs, i.e. of communication that are constant regardless, while others might vary depending on location. We should take this into account

  • Improved CDash to have sections showing the most recent build of develop or main on each platform where we test, even if some of those builds are old.
  • Improved CDash to show which git SHA was built in a Revision column. If the SHA is red, it means the repo was dirty; the Intel 18 build uses an older version of googletest. If you click on the SHA and then click on the long version on the page that opens, you can link directly to the commit in Github. Any file that shows up as modified tries to link to master instead of the branch being built, so those links will not be useful.

    • Stuck trying to get CUDA 11.0 passing
    • Some bug in template templates is his understanding
    • Had to do ugly hacks ot get CUDA 11.2 and Intel passing, but CUDA 11.0 doesn't seem fixable
    • Maybe we can drop CUDA 11.0 from CI?
    • EMPIRE uses 11.2.2
    • Maybe we can add CUDA 11.6 instead?
    • @PhilMiller recommends adding CUDA 12, which adds C++20 support
    • @lifflander will create an issue to do that, swap out the pipeline, and then get 276 Callback parameterization #2136 merged

@pierrepebay / @stmcgovern:

  • They did quite a lot of work on vt-tv#3
    • They went through the JSON reader last week
    • Now trying a simple implementation of the visualizer
      • Get data through the JSON reader and produce a picture
      • Show the objects from one phase, with one circle per object
      • The objects appear consistent through the 8 phases
      • They were confused about why size in the metadata didn't match up with the number of objects
        • size is the number of ranks on the physical compute node (that has shared memory)
        • Not the number of objects in the file
      • Tasks and objects are synonymous when talking about the JSON files
    • @ppebay brought up their use of polygons instead of spheres
      • @ppebay uses spheres in the LBAF visualizer because it was originally intended to allow perspective 3D renderings, not just 2D
      • Spheres look like circles from any perspective, which isn't true of polygons
      • Non-migratable (sentinel) objects in LBAF use (non-3D) square glyph instead of circle/sphere, so inconsistent application of 3D
      • Should we have vt-tv only be 2D, or is 3D Cartesian grid useful?
      • @lifflander thinks that for creating the static images, 3D is not useful
      • For meshes, however, 3D could be helpful because you can change the perspective in Paraview in order to investigate
      • We decided to allow 3D coordinates for routines that create meshes, but PNG images should only allow 2D
    • Discussion about whether vt-tv can operate in parallel
      • Each vt rank will call into vt-tv with its part of the distributed data
      • When there are no communications in the data, generating the PNG images should be embarrassingly parallel
      • The rendering pipeline should be able to generate each rank's tile in the PNG image in parallel

  • He has been trying to close Runtime optimizations stage 3 #2092
    • There are template argument deduction failures
    • Message was type-erased; tried static casting it back to CollectionMsg, but it complains that the IndexType is incorrect
    • @lifflander @stmcgovern will meet to discuss it this afternoon

@ppebay:

  • He wanted to discuss @nlslatt's comments on LBAF#374
    • Given that LBAF's JSON reader will be superseded by the one in vt-tv, do we really want to add reading of the skipped values?
    • @nlslatt was more concerned with documenting that they are missing so they aren't skipped in vt-tv
    • @lifflander said he already implemented the stuff that's missing from both LBAF and vt JSON readers in vt-tv
    • We decided no further action is needed
    • @lifflander still needs to review LBAF#374
