Installing Java 17 on Raspian Bullseye (required for signal-cli >= v0.10.0)

Java 17 is not available in the Raspbian Bullseye repository but you can install it from the Debian repository instead.

• Get the signing key, required for authenticating packages.

$ curl -fsS https://ftp-master.debian.org/keys/release-11.asc | sudo gpg --dearmor -o /usr/share/keyrings/debian-archive-bullseye-stable.gpg

• Add the Debian repository URL. Create the file /etc/apt/sources.list.d/debian-bullseye.list with the following content (replace armhf with arm64 if you are using a 64-bit Raspbian).

deb [arch=armhf signed-by=/usr/share/keyrings/debian-archive-bullseye-stable.gpg] https://deb.debian.org/debian/ bullseye main

• Disable installing every package from the Debian repo except for the Java runtime package. Create the file /etc/apt/preferences.d/limit-debian-bullseye with the following content.

Package: *
Pin: release o=Debian,n=bullseye
Pin-Priority: -1

Package: openjdk-17-jre-headless
Pin: release o=Debian,n=bullseye
Pin-Priority: 100

• Update the package list and install openjdk-17-jre-headless.

$ sudo apt update
$ sudo apt install openjdk-17-jre-headless

You can now continue installing signal-cli and libsignal-client.
